A Cincinnati holiday lights trip with the whole family

Cincy Historic Gem exterior with its covered porch and green siding

For a Cincinnati holiday lights trip with children, grandparents and cousins, check the Zoo's closure days before choosing your stay. The PNC Festival of Lights runs from November 19, 2026 through January 3, 2027, but the Zoo is closed on November 26 and December 24 and 25. A Thanksgiving or Christmas visit needs a Zoo evening on another day.

Our three East Walnut Hills houses give the family private apartments with separate kitchens and living spaces. Younger children can come home for bed while other relatives stay out longer. Start with our family stays and compare the houses, then choose one lights outing everyone wants to share and leave space for meals at home.

Choose your evening from the official calendar

At the Zoo, lights activities begin at 4 PM. Festival hours are 10 AM to 9 PM Sunday through Thursday and 10 AM to 10 PM Friday and Saturday. From December 21 through 31, the listed hours are 10 AM to 10 PM, with the December 24 and 25 closures still applying. Check the Zoo's festival page when choosing your night.

Krohn Conservatory's holiday show is A Spider's Gift, running October 31, 2026 through January 3, 2027, with posted daily hours of 10 AM to 8 PM. That gives families a daytime outing as well as an evening option. Check the show calendar and Krohn visitor information before your visit.

Kings Island WinterFest operates on select nights from November 27 through December 31, 2026. Pick a night on the official WinterFest calendar before adding it to the family plan.

We would put the Zoo and WinterFest on separate evenings. A shorter visit to Krohn may suit relatives who want to keep the evening free. If some children tire early, give their household a car and agree on who will ride home with them. That lets the rest of the family finish its outing without holding up bedtime.

Leave time for coats, cars and check-in

These estimates are without traffic. Rush hour, game days and events add time. Allow for coats, car seats and gathering relatives from several apartments before you set out. Follow each attraction's official instructions for arrival and parking.

Lights activities at the Zoo begin at our regular 4 PM check-in time. On arrival day, settle luggage and groceries at the house before heading out. Early check-in is often possible when no group checks out that morning; a same-day checkout depends on turnover. Keep 4 PM in the plan until we confirm an earlier time. Checkout is 11 AM.

The Historic Gem has driveway parking plus street parking. The Blue House and Victorian Estate have street parking. The number of spaces and arrangements for vans or a bus need confirmation before booking. Include your household cars when discussing the parking and arrival plan.

Thanksgiving morning belongs on its own plan

The Thanksgiving Day Race is Thursday, November 26, 2026, starting and finishing at TQL Stadium. The 10K and 5K start at 9 AM, and the Kids Fun Run starts at 8:30 AM. Confirm the details on the official race page and TQL Stadium announcement.

The Zoo is closed that day, and WinterFest's select-night run starts the following day. Families visiting over Thanksgiving can keep race morning separate from the lights outings. Let interested relatives run while others keep their usual breakfast or begin cooking. Divide kitchen tasks the evening before so nobody waits for a runner to return with the food needed for the meal.

Use the organizer's current instructions for registration, road closures and race-day parking. Our Thanksgiving and Christmas house guide covers meals across separate kitchens and a family stay between outings.

Match the house to bedtimes and meals

For one house with more relatives, consider the Victorian Estate, which sleeps 32. The neighboring Blue House and Historic Gem book together for 42, giving households five apartments between them; individually they sleep 22 and 20. All three houses sleep 74 together.

The two Francis houses also book together for 42 guests. All three houses sleep 74.

The full sleeping guide explains bedrooms, apartments and the queen air mattresses included in those capacities. Assign relatives who want similar bedtimes to the same apartment. Decide which kitchen will handle breakfast and where the family will eat together before everybody brings the same supplies.

These historic houses are not a fit for guests who cannot manage stairs.

For fewer interior stair trips, compare the Historic Gem's lower apartment and read our detailed stairs and baby-gear guide before choosing rooms. Its entrance still requires exterior steps. Our listings include pack-n-plays, high chairs and stair gates; confirm the gear for the apartment and number of children before packing.

Kate described a Christmas stay at the Historic Gem with outings to the places in this plan:

This was a great spot! My family stayed here for the Christmas Holiday. Easy to get to downtown, the Zoo and the Conservatory. The street was nice and lots of restaurants nearby. The house was great, and having the extra condo space was great. Preston was really responsive and helpful. Would definitely stay here or at one of his other properties again.

Keep the house plan clear for everyone

Your group gets the whole house and its private apartments. Each apartment has its own entrance and self check-in, so relatives can arrive separately. Kitchens and living areas let a household keep a quieter evening while others are still out.

Airbnb caps one booking at 16 guests, while our houses sleep 20, 22 and 32. Larger groups and stays across several houses start with an inquiry using the actual headcount, including children. A maximum sleeping capacity also needs a room-by-room plan for people who need bedrooms.

The houses are for registered guests only, with no parties or events, no pets and no smoking. Quiet hours run from 10 PM to 9 AM. Ask about relatives who live nearby or sleep elsewhere before inviting them over. A public lights outing can include the extended family; the lodging plan needs to account for everyone coming to the house.

Questions we hear from groups

Can we see the Zoo lights on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day?

The Zoo is closed on November 26 and December 24 and 25. Choose another evening within the festival run and check the official calendar before your visit.

Can we leave for the lights before our house is ready?

Regular check-in is 4 PM. Plan somewhere for your luggage and groceries until then; an earlier arrival at the house needs confirmation from us and depends on turnover.

Which apartment suits a grandparent who wants fewer stair trips?

Compare the Historic Gem's lower apartment. Its back entrance has a few exterior steps, with no interior stairs inside. Read the detailed access guide and talk through the guest's needs before booking.

Can babies keep a separate bedtime during a lights weekend?

Each private apartment has its own sleeping and living spaces. Choose a room away from your group's evening gathering, confirm baby gear for that apartment and arrange a car for relatives returning early.

What if our lights group is larger than Airbnb allows?

Airbnb caps one booking at 16. Use an inquiry with the full headcount for larger groups or a stay involving several houses so we can discuss the apartments and sleeping plan.

Can Cincinnati relatives stop by after the lights?

Ask us before arranging visits. The houses are for registered guests only, and parties or events are prohibited. Include the proposed people and timing when discussing your stay.

Send us your dates and full headcount, along with the bedtimes, stair needs, baby gear, arrival plans, vehicles and visitors you have in mind. We can help you choose the house arrangement before the family settles its lights calendar.
